Travelin' on Empty

I recently traveled abroad to Portugal and Ireland, all while sick with a horrible respiratory infection that would.not.quit!  In fact it lasted for three months until I was diagnosed with asthma (yay, me!)  
I've written extensively about traveling abroad during a Crohn's flare, which happened most recently on a trip to Scandinavia.  However, us Crohnies know that any kind of debilitating health issue plays hand in glove with the state of our IBD.  A bad bout of the flu can turn into a flare.  Taking antibiotics can cause diarrhea and bleeding.  And so on.
What do you do when you've been planning the trip of a lifetime and you fall ill before you leave or while on the adventure?

It's one of the most common questions I get.
My answer is the same each time, and I recognize how it's not the flashy reply or cure-all mantra most people want to hear, but it's the truth:
